Garlic as Antibiotic & Diets

Somedays I dink around on the US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health. I don't always read about cancer stuff, though. Yesterday I found a cool study showing the synergistic effects of honey and garlic in treating common bacteria like Staph, E. coli, and Salmonella. I was researching treatments for my persistent lung infection (remember that fever I was so excited about?). Anyway, I love finding fun new ways to treat myself, or take care of myself. A few weeks ago my lungs started burning - no sore throat though. And the more I did, the worse it got. I tried running out the sickness (not my brightest idea), and waiting it out. I thought about getting antibiotics, but I haven't taken them since high school. Pharma-antibiotics are amazing, and necessary, but I still like to avoid them at all cost because of the fact that they kill all the good bacteria in your gut, and your gut is not only important for digestion, but it's responsible for 70% of your immune system. I don't want to kill all my good bacteria, so I like to use whole food antibiotics like garlic. I probably sound crazy, but there is actual proof that the allicin and DAS in garlic (most effective when minced and set out for 10-15 minutes) is antibiotic. There's a pretty cool excerpt below, demonstrating some of the proof. There is a link at the bottom to read the study in its entirety. If you head to http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov you can find much more (add words like "garlic", "xdiallyl sulfide", "allicin", "antimicrobial", etc.). Anyway, I started dosing heavily with garlic, two minced cloves every two hours, along with the juice of a head of garlic, 6 lemons, and 8-10 inches of ginger, and low and behold the infection is going away. My cough is almost gone, and I feel much better. Some people don't believe that foods can really make that much of a difference in health, and sometimes I believe them, but that garlic is seriously amazing. I wish food didn't matter, but it does. I would much rather have been eating two cookies every two hours but I can guarantee that there's no antimicrobial benefits from the deserts I like to eat.

Background

In Ethiopia, people use A. mellipodae honey and garlic mixture to treat different types of diseases such as cold, cough, asthma, diarrhea and respiratory infections. But still there is no any scientific report about the synergic effect of any type of honey and garlic extract. People use A. mellipodaehoney and garlic in various combinations, there is no any scientific report about the synergic effect of these substances. Therefore, there is a need to investigate synergic antimicrobial effect of A. mellipodae honey and garlic mixture.

Research frontiers

This finding strongly supports the claim of the local community to use the combination of A. mellipodae honey and garlic for the treatment of different pathogenic bacterial infections. So, garlic in combination with A. mellipodae honey can serve as alternative natural antimicrobial drug for the treatment of pathogenic bacterial infections. Further in vivo study is recommended to come up with a comprehensive conclusion.

Related reports

There are different reports on the separate issues of antimicrobial effects on honey and garlic. However, a report on the synergistic effect of honey and garlic is scarce. This finding fills this research gap and may help base information for further in vivo research.

Innovations and breakthroughs

The finding of the study paves a way to consider and acknowledge the traditional knowledge for the treatment of infectious diseases using natural resources like honey and garlic.

Applications

Garlic in combination with A. mellipodae honey can be used as antimicrobial agent to different pathogenic bacteria. As recommended by the author it needs further validation and then it would be important for the community as it is routinely used as food.

Peer review

This is a very good finding in which the author investigated the synergistic antimicrobial activity of mixture of garlic extract and A. mellipodae honey against pathogenic bacteria. The results are interesting that garlic in combination with A. mellipodae honey can serve as alternative natural antimicrobial drug for the treatment of pathogenic bacterial infections. - http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3757282/

The other fun study I found talks about the effects of diet and neurological and non-neurological diseases. It was co-authored by Seyfriend (remember him, the professor from Boston College - the ketogenic diet for cancer guy?). Check this out.....it's exactly my hypothesis, even though it wasn't specifically regarding cancer.

Abstract

Background

Diet therapies including calorie restriction, ketogenic diets, and fish-oil supplementation have been used to improve health and to treat a variety of neurological and non-neurological diseases.

Methods

We investigated the effects of three diets on circulating plasma metabolites (glucose and β-hydroxybutyrate), hormones (insulin and adiponectin), and lipids over a 32-day period in C57BL/6J mice. The diets evaluated included a standard rodent diet (SD), a ketogenic diet (KD), and a standard rodent diet supplemented with fish-oil (FO). Each diet was administered in either unrestricted (UR) or restricted (R) amounts to reduce body weight by 20%.

Results

The KD-UR increased body weight and glucose levels and promoted a hyperlipidemic profile [the unrestricted ketogenic diet lead to increased sugar and fat in the blood, along with weight gain], whereas the FO-UR decreased body weight and glucose levels and promoted a normolipidemic profile, compared to the SD-UR. When administered in restricted amounts, all three diets produced a similar plasma metabolite profile, which included decreased glucose levels and a normolipidemic profile. Linear regression analysis showed that circulating glucose most strongly predicted body weight and triglyceride levels, whereas calorie intake moderately predicted glucose levels and strongly predicted ketone body levels.

Conclusions

These results suggest that biomarkers of health can be improved when diets are consumed in restricted amounts, regardless of macronutrient composition. - http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4047269/

Okay so, do you see my contradiction here? At first I say that food does matter because it can kill pathogens, then I kinda say that as long as you're calorically restricting, macronutrients don't really matter when it comes to health. You pull up different studies and you'll get contradictory messages - or at least you could argue different interpretations of the second study. But are they mutually exclusive, these two reports? Absolutely not. They can both be true. One is talking about natural chemical properties in food killing bad bacteria, and the other is talking about how an unrestricted diet high in fish oil, although high fat, normalizes body fat and lipid profiles, promotes weight loss, and lowers circulating blood glucose, unlike UR-SD and UR-KD. Or, if you want to eat a Standard (American) Diet, or a Ketogenic Diet, you'd better restrict your calories by 20% if you don't want to have negative health effects. Macronutrients DO matter, but at least you have options.

This is what I do when I'm bored. Obviously I should go munch on more garlic so I can reenter society. (I have voluntarily quarantined myself.) One more day and I'll try running again - better do it outside though because I probably reek like a big fat garlic clove.

We Are Strong Beyond Measure

I can feel it in my bones; I've turned a new leaf. I am no longer fighting this role I've inherited on Earth, this brain tumor life. I am whole heartedly embracing it. I'm enthralled with the research, the supplements, the current treatments, the treatments down the line. I am happy to eat my veggies, and down fish, flax seed, and coconut oil. I'm thriving on clove after clove of garlic and pill after pill.

I can't believe medical professionals - educated people - said I wouldn't walk or run or read again after my hematoma. Here I am, I'm thriving. My brain is so happy it wants to kiss me. I just went down to the lake to take a break from all of the cancer research, and my light reading is on quantum physics. And I love it. It makes sense. It excites me, and challenges me, and makes me giddy. Who would have thought? Clearly not the doctors.

The brain is miraculous, and if you treat it with kindness, feeding it the right foods, exercising it with new stimuli and challenge it, it will sprout new cells, and new connections will be made. I can't believe that I'm one of the lucky ones where my diet and lifestyle and perseverance is working to heal my damaged brain. Depending on the damage, I'm sure it doesn't work for everyone. That's the thing about life, there aren't any guarantees. All you can do is give it your best shot. And never give up. And when miracles happen along the way, whether they may be small or large, celebrate your fortune.

It has taken 4.5 years to recover from the hematoma and hardening of my duramater. It almost killed me, but it didn't. Some people like to say, "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger." I hate that saying. I think I was always this strong, just as strong as I needed to be to get to where I am today. I didn't need a disaster, a diagnosis, to make me into a new person. It was always in me. I think that's true with all people. Some may just need to dig a little, but it's there. We're all infinitely capable. We're strong beyond measure. We just have to believe in ourselves.

Armouring UP

This photo makes me laugh. I was trying to hand over my phone to Danny so that he could take a photo of Mount Rainier. It sums up my life at this point, completely sideways.

I have been exhausted, spinning around in circles, trying to take care of my body, rallying the troops against Hermie. I'm in a regrouping mode. Last week, I realized through further research, that I've been incorrectly doing the whole artemisinin protocol. Apparently, cancer cells do most of their reproduction during the night. The highest cell division between midnight and 1:00 am. My researcher who told me to stop eating after dinner, and walk in the evenings for a few hours before pills, never said a time to stop eating. He just said, refrain from eating for 3-4 hours after dinner, then take your pills and go to bed. So, being the old soul that I am. I decided to stop eating by 4:30 at the latest so that I could get to bed early. I like to be tucked into bed by 8:30 pm. Well, guess what, I've been sabotaging myself. The point of this low dose is to ingest the pills between 10:00 - 11:00 pm so that the artemisinin is at its most effective state during the replication of the cells (12:00-1:00 pm) - that's when the cancer cells are most vulnerable. The artemisinin has a half life of about 3-4 hours, so there was still SOME artemisinin getting through, but the doses would be incredibly low and quickly tapering off. Damn it! I'm always effing up things. Usually, when it's not life threatening stuff (like when I put my foot in my mouth), it's hilarious. But in times like this, I just have to roll my eyes, and cringe. I guess it's fitting that my mother's nickname for me is, our little Miss Brooks, from the old TV show. Miss Brooks was always "accidentally" getting into trouble, biting off more than she could chew - or trying to get one outcome and instead having it backfire.

So, my life is upside down ever since last Thursday when we realized that my early-to-bed routine was completely killing the successfulness of the artemisinin. It's nice to know that we can tweak things to make it more effective, but now, I'm completely exhausted. I've been walking for two hours from 8:00 - 10:00 pm every night with Danny, or with girl friends, and then I take my pills and head to bed, finally tucking in at about 11:00 pm.

My plan is to continue this schedule until next week when I can start the chemo drink. I want to keep fighting every single day, giving Hermie no breaks. My sleep is definitely hurting, but I know that I can push through for one more week. Once I get off my sleep pattern it's even harder to get rested, I can't seem to nap or sleep in, but I think this is worth it. I'm giving him a full frontal attack! Down with Hermie!!

I'm still on my whole foods diet, and I've been supplementing with borage seed oil (proven to attack astrocytomas), shark liver oil (immune stimulant), fish oil (helps heal the myelin sheath of healthy cells, increasing neurotransmission), maitake mushroom (proven to attack astrocytomas), shiitake mushroom (immune stimulant), lions mane (immune stimulant), vitamin C 500mg (antioxidant), and Vitamin E 400 IU (antioxidant). All supplements are taken in the morning, and then I'm taking the low doses of artemisinin late at night. On a side note, did you know that tumors can not use fat for fuel? That doesn't mean that I should go out and eat a chunk of lard, but it does make me happy to think about my fat supplements (borage seed, shark liver, fish, flax seed, etc.), all of those healthy fats are helping my body regenerate healthy cells, stimulate my immune system, and rejuvenating my body. That's exciting!!

All in all, the diet is working just fine. I'm happy with what I'm eating. It's lots of veggies, some lean meats like seafood, and then little bits of fruits, nuts, healthy fats and some whole grains. When I have a sweet tooth, I slice up a fuji and powder it with obscene amounts of cinnamon (which helps stabilize blood glucose levels). I'm enjoying my time before the chemo drink because I know that it's going to effect my taste buds and appetite. For now, I just get to enjoy my happy, healthy state. I'm mentally preparing for serious battle, putting on all of the armour (exercise, diet, artemisinin, supplements, breathing, etc.), so that I can come out a victorious warrior during the MRI on July 19th.

Balancing DHA & EPA

Vegetarian DHA From Algae (200 mg ea pill)

Bushel of Purple Kale
Banana
4 Tablespoons Fish Oil

Breakfast. Sorry for complaining yesterday. Sometimes I just need to barf out my feelings. I'm doing better though! Here's my breakfast drink. It has four tablespoons of fish oil, and I've read that it's important to balance out the DHA and EPA in your diet to maximize the effects against inflammation (a promoter of tumor growth). One tablespoon of my fish oil has 500 mg DHA and 800 mg EPA, so I took 6 DHA pills (200 mg each) to even out the four tablespoons. Not a delicious breakfast by any means, but hey, I downed it with a verbal toast to Hermie, swallowing the pills like fishy candy. The pills are vegetarian, but they taste and smell like fish. It's weird.

Anyway, little by little, Mr Herm is being knocked down by my arsenal of tricks. I have to believe that.

Dan and I were talking about it last night, as we were falling asleep in bed, we honestly have no expectations for the next MRI. It could show a massive decrease in tumor cells or an increase in tumor cells. We have no idea. That's the thing, you can be hopeful, but if I was to feel too confident I believe it would be incredibly dangerous - it could make me complacent. No one wants to be disappointed.

Time To Work

Started playing with my pills this morning. Not exactly the beer can towers of college days. Yesterday, at the gym, I weighed myself. YIKES. In January at my last MRI I weighed 144. Now, I weigh 150. I guess I need to take this a little bit more seriously. It was quite the wake up call. Dan and I talked about it for quite a bit last night. We are very strict right now, this whole week I'm on a plant based diet (other than a glass of milk each morning and evening for pills). We're going to take Saturday off to celebrate Saint Patty's day with friends, but come Sunday we will be back on the whole foods diet of months past. We will not be cheating again until after the MRI. It's been a lot of fun, but it's time to get back to business. I have to say, when I stepped on the scale and had to move the little black weight over further and further to the right, my stomach pulled into knots and my sweat pores started tingling. I was in shock.

Oh well, I can get this back on track. I love taking a week or so of only eating plants. You can eat whatever you want, as much as you want. It's actually a lot of fun. That probably sounds crazy, but it's fun to change it up. Damn. 150? Ugh. Jessica Lynn. I'm not so upset about the numbers necessarily, it's more the fact that any extra weight feeds Herm. That's always the kicker. But, each day, each meal, I decide what I'm going to put in my mouth and each step is a choice. I'm ready to conquer this next month and see what's going on in my brain at the MRI. I have to relax and play a little, but now it's time to work.
